Congress back to work under heavy guard, after Trump supporters attack U.S. Capitol
WASHINGTON (The HQ News) – Congress is back to work under heavy guard, after hundreds of President Donald Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday in the most serious assault since over 200 years of U.S. history.
The rioters in a massive show of power to overturn Trump’s election defeat, forcibly crossed the metal security barricades, damaged and broke infrastructure to enter into the Capitol, kept battling police in the hallways and delayed certification of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden’s victory for hours.
As per reliable sources four people died during the disorder – one from gunshot wounds and three from medical emergencies while fifty two people were arrested.
The protestors also besieged the House of Representatives chamber while lawmakers were inside, banging on its doors and forcing suspension of the certification debate. Security officers piled furniture against the chamber’s door and drew their pistols before helping lawmakers and others escape.
Under heavy guard hours later, both houses of Congress resumed their work on certifying Biden’s Electoral College win, with debate stretching into the early hours of Thursday.
Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the session after the resumption of Congress session said: “To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today – you did not win,”, “Let’s get back to work.”
Police declared the building secure shortly after 5:30 p.m. (2230 GMT).
The attack on the Capitol was incited by Trump as per allegations of U.S. lawmakers and majority media and was the conclusion of months of divisive and escalating rhetoric around the Nov. 3 election, with Trump repeatedly making false claims that the vote was rigged and urging his supporters to help him overturn his loss.
