Talal Chaudhry of PML-N convicted of contempt of court

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday convicted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Tallal Chaudhry in a contempt of court case filed against him.

A three-judge bench, headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmad, ordered Chaudhry’s conviction until the rising of court and imposed a fine worth Rs100,000. As a direct repercussion of the conviction, Chaudhry is ineligible to contest elections for the next five years.

On July 11, the bench had reserved the verdict. Earlier, the country’s top court rejected Chaudhry’s request for more time to produce witnesses in the case.

The Supreme Court had taken suo motu notice on February 1 of his anti-judiciary remarks and later initiated contempt of court hearing against him.

The verdict in the case was reserved on July 11.

The PMLN leader, who served as state minister for Interior, can challenge   his conviction in the Supreme Court.
