Taliban-US peace deal signing ceremony in Doha, Qatar

Doha, Qatar (29th Feb, 2020) – Taliban and the United States of America (US) under the leadership of US President Trump are set to sign an interim deal for bringing peace in Afghanistan which will pave way for US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan and decide overall future path of Afghanistan.

The negotiations fully supported and backed by Islamic Republic of Pakistan have been carried for about two years in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Diplomats from Afghanistan, US, Pakistan and other UN member states started gathering on Saturday morning along with Taliban representatives at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha, a five-star resort overlooking the Gulf where the peace deal is expected to be signed at 11:00 GMT.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will represent Pakistan in the signing ceremony of peace agreement.

He expressed confidence that the peace agreement will set the tone for inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue. He said it is a big day for Afghanistan and a great opportunity as well. He wished Afghanistan peace and stability.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will witness the signing in Doha, while Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is expected to issue a joint declaration with the government of Afghanistan in Kabul.

US President Trump, in a statement, urged Afghans to seize the opportunity for peace and a new future for their country.

He said when he ran for office, he had promised the American people that he would begin to bring the US troops home, and seek to end this war.  We are making substantial progress on that promise.
