Pervaiz Elahi elected Punjab Assembly speaker denting PML-N by securing 15 PML-N MPA’s additional votes

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) was elected speaker of the Punjab Assembly on Thursday 16th Aug (today) by securing 201 votes from the total 349 votes with one vote being rejected. 15 votes by PML-N MPA’s were also cast in his favour proving Ch. Pervaiz Elahi has strong support in province from among PML-N Punjab MPA’s .
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nominee secured 201 votes against PML-N candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal Gujjar’s 147.
Ch. Pervaiz Elahi has been sworn in as speaker of the provincial assembly and was being felicitated by lawmakers on his victory when this report was filed.
Earlier, uproar ruled in the Punjab Assembly as voting for the top slots of speaker and deputy speaker commenced with many PML-N lawmakers resorting to sloganeering.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) choosed not to back PML-N candidates. It has been revealed by sources that PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari had instructed party MPAs to not vote for candidates of either party.
