LAHORE (Wednesday, Feb 6, 2019) – Former Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani was illegally stopped from leaving the country by security officials at the Lahore airport late Tuesday night.

The name of former PM was not on ECL neither was he intimated in prior by any government authority that he should not leave the country.

The former PM was travelling to Seoul for World Summit 2019, where he was the keynote speaker.

According to the Federal Investigation Agency, the former PM had reached the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore to catch his flight for South Korea via Bangkok to attend a conference. However, his name was on the no-fly list.

“At the immigration counter, the former PM was informed that his name was placed on the black list therefore he could not leave the country,” a source from FIA revealed, adding that it was following orders from the interior ministry.

Reacting strongly, the former PM and senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader said he had always appeared in the courts in the different ongoing cases against him.

“There was no point in placing my name on (the) no-fly list. I was not fleeing the country. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sole agenda seems to be targeting his political opponents,” he said.

The former PM’s daughter tweeted that: ‘My father Yusuf Raza Gilani was stopped at Lahore airport while going to Seoul for World Summit 2019, where he was the keynote speaker. His name is Not in the ECL, as he travelled to Nepal a few weeks ago. He received no letter whatsoever informing him’.

The former PM’s son Ali Haider Gilani condemned the govt. act and tweeted: ‘I condemn the govt for putting @YR_Gillani name on ecl and he was stopped at the airport while leaving for Seoul to attend world summit’.
