EU finally has modern copyright rules fit for digital age: Andrus Ansip

BRUSSELS (Thursday, 14 Feb, 2019) – as reported earlier on “THE HEADQUARTERS” Daily – the European Commission’s Vice-President for the Digital Single Market Mr. Andrus Ansip has announced that: “Agreement reached on copyright! Europeans will finally have modern copyright rules fit for digital age with real benefits for everyone: guaranteed rights for users, fair remuneration for creators, clarity of rules for platforms.

He tweeted the announcement through his official Twitter handle.

Andrus added that with the new copyright rules internet users will have more possibilities to use and access copyrighted material with full legal certainty. Freedom of expression is guaranteed, and users will have the power to swiftly contest any unjustified removal of their content by platforms.

He said that “the Europeans will preserve Europe’s rich cultural heritage. The digitization of collections in European museums, archives and other cultural heritage institutions will have no copyright restrictions.,

“Researchers will be able to make the most of the increasing number of publications available online, as they will benefit from a copyright exception to carry out text and data mining on large sets of data contained in copyright-protected publications”.

Andrus emphasized that: “The way people enjoy culture and entertainment has completely changed – and this is good. But it is important that we don’t leave creators in the cold. Fair remuneration of authors and performers is laid down for the first time as a principle in European copyright law”.
